Set up a new account

Outlook for iPhone and iPad supports IMAP only. If you need POP3, use the “Mail” app – or set the account up here as IMAP.

  1. 1

Open Outlook. Tap your account picture at the top left, then the gear icon at the bottom left.

If Outlook first suggests another address it found on the device, tap “Skip” there. Type your email address then and tap “Add Account”.

Wait a moment. Usually Outlook then shows the form of the next step by itself, partly filled in. If it does not, tap “Set Up Account Manually” and then “IMAP” under “ADVANCED”.

Check every line, even if Outlook has already filled it in, and correct whatever differs. Enter your name and a description. Under “IMAP Incoming Mail Server”: “IMAP Hostname” imap.mailprotect.be, “IMAP Port” 993, “Port Security” SSL; as “IMAP Username” your full email address. You enter the passwords at the very end.

Under “SMTP Outgoing Mail Server”: “SMTP Hostname” smtp-auth.mailprotect.be, “SMTP Port” 587; as “SMTP Username” your full email address again. If there is a dot at the end of the server name, delete that dot. The row “Port Security” below it must show STARTTLS; if not, tap that row.

Only if it showed something else: choose STARTTLS and go back with the arrow at the top left. Important: port 587 belongs with STARTTLS, otherwise sign-in fails.

Now type your password under “IMAP Password” and under “SMTP Password” and tap “Sign In”. Outlook empties both password fields whenever you open “Port Security” or dismiss an error message – always type them again afterwards.

    If it does not work

    • The username must be the full email address, for incoming and for outgoing mail.
    • Password rejected? Check upper and lower case. It is your mailbox password – when switching servers, the same one as before.
    • Sending does not work? Try port 465 with SSL for the outgoing server.
    • A certificate warning almost always means a typing error in the server name.
