Apple breaks silence to end speculation about a merger
Apple Computer inc., which last week removed its chief executive and demoted is chairman, broke weeks of silence on Thursday and said it isn't involved in merger talks "with any party".
The company alsos said it expects to post an operating
loss for the first three months of this year that will
exceed the loss reported for the last three months
of fiscal 1995.
Apple said it is abandoning a policy of not responding
to "rumour and speculation" to deny reports
that a merger is being negotiated because the takeover
speculation is having a "destabilizing effect"
on its business.
"As a result of the adverse impact of such rumours and speculation on customer-buying decisions, as well as other market factors, the company expects to report an operating loss for its second quarter that will significantly exceed its its first-quarter operating loss of $69 million," the company's statement said.
There had been reports for nearly a month that Sun Microsystems Inc,. the leading maker of computer workstations used in engineering and research, was courting Apple. But the prospect of a deal seemed to dim after Apple appointe a new chief-executive last friday. The new leader, Gil Amelio, was expected to try to resuscitate Apple first.
Apple didn't mention Sun in its statement thursday and
said only that it "is not currently in merger
discussions with any part." It didn't mention
whether there were earlier talks.
Mr. Amelio is a turnround expert who stepped down as
chief executive of National Semiconductor Corp. to
take control of Apple.
"I want to emphasise my strong beleif, despite the obvious disappointment of our performance in the first and second quarters, that the foundations of our business are sound, and that Apple Computer has the ability, determination and staying power to deal with current challenges and to move forward with confidence in the future," Mr. Amelio said in the statement released by Apple.
I'll fully expect that our customers' grandchildren will be buying Apple products," Mr. Amelio said.
The company took out full-page newspaper advertisements Thursday to review its accomplishments as the company that created home computing and to promise that "together, we will go farther still."
Mr. Amelio replaced Mike Spindler as chief executive and A.C. Markkula as chairman, Mr. Markkula, who helped found the company nearly 20 years ago, became vice chairman.
