InterCon Announces Monumental Speed Increase in Industry-leading Network File Sharing Software
NFS/Share 1.4 Is Three Times Faster Than Previous Version
InterCon Systems Corporation, a market leader in cross-platform solutions for TCP/IP networking, today released an enhanced version of its industry-leading network file sharing software, NFS/Share 1.4. With the new release, users can take advantage of improved connectivity features and much greater distributed computing performance.
NFS/Share has already been acknowledged as the fastest NFS solution on the market for the Macintosh. With the new release, NFS/Share file read and write functions are as much as three times faster than before. "File access rates approach one megabyte per second, the equivalent of 250 pages of text per second," said David Saunders, Director of Engineering at InterCon. "At those rates NFS/Share becomes enormously useful to any company that requires large-file sharing across a network." NFS/Share is ideal for industries such as graphics/design, prepress, research/development, and data processing that have a need to integrate centralized data, communicate globally, or continually share/backup large data files.
Based on Sun Microsystems' Open Network Computing/Network File System (ONC/NFS), NFS/Share was developed to allow Macintosh users to take advantage of distributed file sharing, providing seamless access to NFS-supported services such as UNIX files, IBM mainframe systems, VMS hosts, and PC servers. Advantages of using NFS as a Macintosh and PC file sharing system are that it is an open standard supported by many vendors on almost all platforms, and it uses IP as the networking protocol.
The transparent connectivity of NFS/Share is available with the simplicity of the Macintosh interface. Accessing NFS servers such as Sun sparc stations, supercomputers, and Auspex file servers is as easy as using a local hard drive-no additional software is necessary. NFS/Share is installed in the System Folder and accessed through the Chooser. Once the connection has been made and the volume appears on the desktop, the user can copy, delete, open, and print files just as though the volume were an actual Macintosh hard drive. Authentication services are provided by NIS (formerly Yellow Pages), PCNFSD, or BWNFSD.
NFS/Share includes additional user interface enhancements to more closely mirror AppleShare. "Users don't have to learn additional programs or operating systems," said Saunders. "NFS/Share presents files from remote servers in the same friendly, familiar format of regular Macintosh files."
