De Mac voorop!!
Sinds bijna een jaar ben ik op mijn werk gedwongen met een PC (DOS en Windows) te werken. Daar ik toch een beetje op de hoogte wil blijven van wat er in die 'wereld' zo al gebeurt koop ik soms wel eens een PC-tijdschrift. Daar lees je zo nu en dan wel wat leuks. Navolgend stukje trof ik aan in PC Pro, Januari 1996 in de rubriek Real World Computing: Graphics van Mark Stephens: software developer, journalist and graphic designer.
A lull for PC DTP
On the desktop publishing front there seems to be a
fallow patch in the release of software. Not only has
QuarkXpress sunk almost without a trace on the PC,
but Adobe PageMaker 6.0 has been released on the Apple
Macintosh way before the PC version is due. For those
of us trying to design and publish on the PC platform,
it's a little depressing.
A couple of years ago I was predicting that the IBM-compatible would equal the Mac as a design platform by 1995, but I was being overly optimistic, or perhaps plain wrong. At least there are now service bureaux accustomed to taking output from PCs, but they seem to be geared mainly to CorelDraw! rather than anything else.
It remains to be seen what sort of boost PageMaker 6.0 will give to PC publishing, but I don't see much of a shift away from the Macintosh in this arena. I"m immensly angry that the likes of PageMaker and Quark, which are excellent in their Mac versions, seem to lack something in PC format. Just think Microsoft could do with similar technology: the resulting software would be slick, powerful and supremely easy to use. And I'd bet that they could also do a Macintosh version without the Windows version breaking all the user interface guidelines as well!
Dit soort artikelen c.q. opmerkingen verwacht je niet zo gauw in de PC-wereld. De normale gang van zaken is wel dat de Mac-gebruiker zijn 'beklag' er over doet dat sommige software niet in een Mac-versie verkrijgbaar is.
Dat neemt niet weg dat het lezen van zulke artikelen bij mij een aangenaam gevoel achterlaten! Vreemd gevoel voor humor zullen we maar zeggen.
