Natural Intelligence ships Roaster(TM), first environment for developing Java(TM) applets on the Macintosh

Cambridge, MA, January 5, 1996: Natural Intelligence, Inc. announced that it is shipping Developer Release 1 of Roaster(TM), the first environment for creating applets in Sun Microsystems, Inc.'s Java(TM) programming language on the Macintosh platform.

Roaster, the Applet Development Environment for Java, includes a hierarchical project window, powerful source code editor, interpreter, Java compiler, debugger, and speedy runtime engine.

The Roaster Integrated Development Environment (IDE) contains the following features:
* intuitive interface
* lightning-fast Java source code compiler for speedy development
* accelerated for Power Macintosh (will support 68K soon)

* Java class disassembler
* powerful Java debugger

The Roaster code editor features:
* ontext-sensitive syntax font and color styling for easier organization and reading of code
* powerful search and replace features, including regular expression matching and batch search capabilities
* Natural Intelligence's proprietary QuickCode Pro(tm) technology
* multiple clipboards for organization of code snippets
* powerful macro capabilities for automation of coding
* bookmark tools for quick navigation through your code

The Roaster Project window lets you:
* organize all class files for easy access without searching through directories
* recompile only the files you need before you run them (Make feature)
* jump directly to any method within a class in the window
* represent packages hierarchically
* open more than one project window at a time and drag source files between projects

The Roaster interpreter is a robust Virtual Machine engine that supports the Java Virtual Machine specification. Its features include:
* multiple-threading
* garbage collection
* exception handling

Roaster users will be able to run Natural Intelligence's native compiler as well as Sun Microsystems' javac compiler for full Java compliance. Roaster also features a runtime environment (the NI Applet Runner) for testing your applets.

Natural Intelligence expressed confidence that this product will be a great success. "Other companies began working with Java once it became popular, and are now rushing to meet the demand for development tools," said Joshua D. Wachs, President of Natural Intelligence. "But because we've been researching and experimenting with this technology since its release, we were able to design a solid, superior development environment that takes advantage of all the features that are unique to Java-in other words, this isn't just a 'plug-in.'" Wachs added, "We knew that Macintosh developers would be hungry for this product, and because we planned ahead, we're able to deliver it now, not in six months."

"We're excited that Natural Intelligence has taken the lead in bringing Java to the Macintosh development community," said Eric Schmidt, chief technology officer at Sun Microsystems, Inc.

"Natural Intelligence has always demonstrated foresight and commitment when it comes to meeting the needs of Macintosh developers," said Peter Christy, Senior Director of Developer Tools at Apple Computer, Inc. "Their timely release of Java development tools for the Mac is a major step towards establishing the Macintosh as the premier Internet programming platform."

And what does the developer community think of Roaster? Sean Doyle from MIT's Laboratory for Computer Science, a seed tester for the DR1 release, had this to say: "With Roaster, I've found a complete Java development environment. It is the fastest Java tool I have used for prototyping, debugging, and delivering applets."

Roaster's list price is $399.00, and is available directly through Natural Intelligence, by emailing orders@natural.com, calling 1-800-739-1616, or through the Apple Developer Tools catalog and MacTech mail order store. MacTech will also be selling Roaster in their booth at Macworld San Francisco. For more information on Roaster, interested parties should email info@natural.com.
