Maak eens een babbeltje met je Mac...

Betreft : Hoe de Mac laten praten in systeem 7.5? -problemen-

>> ...maar Jos heeft het wel bij het rechte eind. Ik zocht gewoon naar de Speech Manager van system 7.5 (de nieuwe MacinTalk eigenlijk).

En die vind ik dus niet! Volgens Jos -als ik hem goed begrepen heb tenminste- zou die moeten zitten in de standaard system 7.5 installatie (verder zou er in de system 7.5 update ook nog een verbetering van de speech manager moeten aanwezig zijn). Ik heb dus standaard system 7.5 en update 1.0 op mijn harde schijf staan. Geen spoor van een Speech Manager op mijn disk! En ook niet op de CD-ROM van Apple... <<

Dat is toch vreemd! Mijn software voor system 7.5 staat op een CDROM met de naam "Apple Macintosh CD". Het is de US-versie. Op die CD-ROM komt een folder "Extra's" voor. Die bevat 12 items:

In de folder "Text-to-Speech" bevinden zich de volgende items:

MacinTalk Pro
Speech Manager
Voices

En dat zijn de enige files die je nodig hebt om de Mac te laten praten. Het kan al met alleen de speech manager. Meer geavanceerd gaat het met MacinTalk Pro plus de bijbehorende Voices.

Bij de installatie worden die files niet standaard mee geïnstalleerd. Je moet ze zelf uit de folder "Extras" halen en in je extensies folder plaatsen. Zou dat het misverstand kunnen zijn? Anders heb ik kennelijk een uitgebreidere 7.5 CDROM dan jij en je vader.

Voor alle duidelijkheid herhaal ik hier nog eens wat in het document About Text-to-speech te lezen is:

About the Text-to-Speech Software

What is Text-to-Speech?

Your computer comes with a system extension (called Speech Manager) that allows your computer to speak to you. This feature is called text-to-speech. You can use it with any application program that takes advantage of this feature, such as the SimpleText program on your computer's hard disk. You do not need any additional hardware to use text-to-speech.

When would I use Text-to-Speech?

Text-to-Speech is an evolving technology that gives you new and exciting ways to interact with your computer. With text-to-speech capabilities, you can

* have your computer read your mail messages to you

* proofread a section of a document by having it spoken to you

* help teach a person to read by having the computer speak the typed words

How can I try Text-to-Speech?

Text-to-Speech is made available through application programs whose manufacturers have chosen to incorporate it. You can try this feature out by following these steps:

1. Double-click the SimpleText icon to open it (or choose Open from the File menu if you are already using SimpleText).

A new document called Untitled 1 appears on the screen.

2. Type a short sentence, for example, "You're a great person."

3. Choose Speak All from the Sound menu.

You can also have the computer speak a portion of your document. To do this, select the text you want to hear, and choose Speak Selection from the Sound menu.

If you want to add other voices that your computer can use, follow these steps:

1. Open the Text-to-Speech folder (located in the Extras folder on the Apple Macintosh CD).

2. Drag the Voices folder and the MacinTalkPro extension to the Extensions folder (in the System folder) on your hard disk.

3. Restart your computer.

4. Choose the Voices pop-up menu in the Sound menu, and then follow the steps for trying text-to-speech listed above.

Reinstalling the Text-to-Speech Software

If you ever need to reinstall the Text-to-Speech software, follow these steps:

1. Open the Text-to-Speech folder (located in the Extras folder on the Apple Macintosh CD).

2. Drag the Speech Manager file to the Extensions folder (in the System folder) on your hard disk.

3. If you want additional voices beyond the default Text-to-Speech voice, then also drag the following to the Extensions folder (in the System folder) on your hard disk:

* MacinTalk Pro
* Voices folder

These additional files will require more memory than just using the Speech Manager by itself. They do, however, provide higher quality speech and an interesting variety of voices. If you run out of memory, then you should remove these files and use only the Speech Manager.

4. Restart your computer.

In de system update 7.5.1 op de jubileum CDROM bevindt zich nog eens de speech manager, maar dat is net als bij Extras van system 7.5.0 weer de versie 1.3, dezelfde dus.

Waarom die als update gebracht wordt begrijp ik eigenlijk niet, maar als je de Speech Manager niet hebt, en wel de jubileum CDROM, dan kun je hem zo via een custom install te pakken krijgen.

Zoals uit bovenstaande opsomming van de folder Extras blijkt, is er een aparte folder "PlainTalk". Die dient niet om je Mac te laten praten, maar om hem spraak te laten herkennen, het omgekeerde dus. Maar dat kan alleen met heel bepaalde typen Macs. Daarom ga ik er hier niet verder op in.

Maar om de verwarring compleet te maken, bevat deze PlainTalk folder ook de complete inhoud van de Text-to-Speech folder. Anders dan in de Text-to-Speech folder is hier met een nette installer gewerkt. En die biedt je keuze om de Text-to-Speech software eveneens te installeren. En daarom had Henk dus ook gelijk, toen hij schreef dat Text-to-Speech onderdeel van PlainTalk is.

Beter gezegd: Text-to-Speech wordt niet alleen als apart onderdeel, maar ook als onderdeel van PlainTalk geleverd.

Hopelijk is nu alles voldoende duidelijk.
