Apple's QuickDraw 3D Chosen as Editor's Choice Award Winner
MacUser Editors Name QuickDraw 3D Breakthrough Technology of the Year
CUPERTINO, California--December 22, 1995--MacUser, the leading monthly magazine for business buyers of Apple Macintosh computers, has selected Apple Computer Inc.'s QuickDraw 3D as the 1995 Editor's Choice Award winner for Breakthrough Technology of the Year. At a virtual ceremony held on December 17, 1995 on America Online, MacUser honored the best new Macintosh products of 1995. Winners from 36 categories were selected on the basis of technological innovation, quality, performance, user friendliness, and value to Macintosh users.
"Eddy Award winning products represent innovative technologies that result in real value to Macintosh users," said MacUser editor-in-chief, Maggie Canon. "It is important to note that inventive products have driven the success of the platform and, over the years, have exceeded our wildest expectations for the capabilities of personal computers."
QuickDraw 3D is Apple's new cross-platform 3D API (Application Programming Interface) for Power Macintosh (currently available) and Microsoft Windows (Spring, 1996 general availability).
QuickDraw 3D has four main components: a fast 24-bit interactive renderer, system-level handling of 3D components, a new 3D file format standard called 3DMF, and user-interface guidelines for developers. With QuickDraw 3D, users can simply drop extensions into their Power Macintosh's System Folder and fire up a QuickDraw 3D-savvy application. QuickDraw 3D allows for fluid manipulation of fully rendered 3D objects and drag and drop of 3D objects to and from the Scrapbook or other applications.
"This award reaffirms our commitment to bring the
most innovative technology to the marketplace,"
said Kai-Fu Lee, Apple vice president, Interactive
Media Group. "We think it's important to
note how Apple's products are bringing the 3D experience
within grasp of the mainstream user. Apple is raising
the industry standard in personal computing and is
acknowledged by the industry in doing so."
A Ziff-Davis publication, MacUser is the largest paid circulation Macintosh monthly magazine. Based in Foster City, California, MacUser provides comprehensive, labs-based product reviews and productivity tips for optimizing the Macintosh platform to more than 444,000 experienced business buyers each month.
