Claris ships FileMaker Pro 3.0 for Macintosh and Windows

Customers get "simply powerful" real world solutions with choice of relational or flat-file data management

Santa Clara, Calif., Brussels - 20th of December 1995 - Claris Corporation announced today the immediate availability of FileMaker Pro 3.0 for Power Macintosh, Macintosh 680X0, Windows 95 and Windows NT, the next version of one of the only network ready, cross-platform end-user databases. Leveraging its renowned interface, FileMaker Pro 3.0 now provides both Macintosh and Windows 95 users with an easy approach to creating and displaying relationships between multiple files. Alone among databases, FileMaker Pro 3.0 also gives existing FileMaker Pro 2.1 users the freedom to retain their records within a flat file design or convert an existing FileMaker Pro flat-file into a relational model. The new FileMaker Pro is packed with hundreds of new features, including the ability to automatically convert foreign files (DBF, WKS and others) directly into FileMaker Pro files, greater scripting capabilities, OLE 2.0 (Windows 95 only) support, automatic phone dialing, improved word processing and much more.

Version 3.0 for Macintosh will also support FileMaker Pro 3.0 Companion for the Apple MessagePad with Newton 2.0, currently scheduled to ship from Claris in 1996.

Claris also announced the immediate availability of FileMaker Pro Server 3.0, the next version of its database application server that runs on a designated Macintosh computer and supports Windows and Macintosh clients (see separate news release).

Ready-to-Use Databases in Just Minutes -- No "Wizardry" Required !
Users within small business, corporate workgroups, and education will find instant practical solutions to managing their specific data by employing any of the 40 ready-made templates built into FileMaker Pro 3.0. The new templates can be selected by users right from the start within a new opening screen when the application is first launched. Users can gain immediate access to numerous database templates ranging from inventory systems to expense reports.

Easy Conversion From Version 2.1 to 3.0 for Macintosh and Windows 3.1 Users
Existing FileMaker Pro 2.1 users can easily upgrade to version 3.0 while completely retaining their data, layouts, graphics, as well as their scripts and multi-file lookups. Creating relational links between FileMaker Pro databases is a simple point and click process achieved within a dialogue box found under the Define Relationships Menu command. Data from other files can be easily displayed and changed on-screen within a new Portal display, a new database interface innovation from Claris introduced in Version 3.0.

In addition, FileMaker Pro 3.0 users can automatically create ready-to-use databases, complete with field names and pre-sized fields from just raw data (import text, DBF, DIF, and WKS among others) simply by opening the files. FileMaker Pro will create the database automatically and import the data!

Hundreds of Powerful New Features and Capabilities
* Over 15 ready-to-run customizable solutions for business, home and education : Version 3.0 has over 15 pre-designed template solutions -- all easily modifiable -- for business (invoicing, lead tracking and contact management, home (music, video, and home inventory), education (certificates and student records) and general purposes (mailing lists, fax cover sheets, time sheets, expense reports, and more).

* Windows 95 performance and support : FileMaker Pro 3.0 is Windows 95 logo-certified and takes full advantage of the Windows 95 operating system. With a 32-bit design, FileMaker Pro 3.0 provides OLE 2.0 client and drag-and-drop support, and even allows Windows users on a network to share FileMaker Pro files that include OLE objects with Macintosh users. If a Macintosh computer is serving as a host on the network, Windows client users may embed, link and edit OLE objects and the Macintosh host can view these same objects as graphics. Version 3.0 also supports long-format file naming, right mouse button functions, and a status bar.

* New Tools to Speed Productivity : FileMaker Pro 3.0 sports a wide group of new tools to help users focus on getting tasks done, including a new Button tool on the Tool Bar Palette to perform tasks such as phone dialing and other FileMaker Pro commands and scripts--without any special programming. A new Portal tool allows users to simply create a "window" within any given record in which to place fields from other related files so they can be viewed or edited when working with one to many relationships.

* Greater field-level text handling and new merge field capability : Users of FileMaker Pro 3.0 can now employ text rulers (inches, centimeters or pixels), tabs, indents and formatting within every text field in their database record for better looking reports, letters and faxes. Instead of requiring users to create a merge document, such as a form letter, in a word processing program, mail merges can now be generated entirely within FileMaker Pro 3.0.

* Databases file capacity now significantly more than 10 times the previous limit of 32 MB: Also, as many as 50 files can be open at the same time (the previous limit was only 16).

*Advanced tools for sophisticated users/developers for greater database automation and setting error captures : Version 3.0 breaks new ground for users who need to create automated tasks within their database with such new ScriptMaker capabilities as conditional branching and looping, more complete interface control (with disable user abort, freeze window, etc.), PlainTalk, AppleScript Attachability, OLE 2.0, DDE/Message/Send mail support (Windows version), custom message dialogs, comments, phone dialing, and script duplication. The new version also provides over 40 new calculations which can be stored or unstored in each record. Version 3.0 also includes a new global field type which can hold values for all records in the database (i.e., sales tax percentage) and can even temporarily store scripts.

* New Container field introduced in Version 3.0 : The Picture/Sound field type has been replaced by the Container Field type, which allows users to store a picture, sound, movie or OLE object (Windows only).

* Online context-sensitive help and tutorial : For the first time, users of FileMaker Pro 3.0 can get an on-line interactive tour of the application to gain quick familiarity of the functionality of FileMaker Pro. Further, they can also get fast answers to questions or problems wherever they are within the database when working with records.

* Greater network support : FileMaker Pro 3.0 for Macintosh runs over IPX/SPX, AppleTalk and now TCP/IP networks. Version 3.0 for Windows 95 runs over compatible IPX/SPX or TCP/IP networks.

FileMaker Pro Family : More Database Power Wherever It's Needed
FileMaker Pro Server 3.0, which runs on Power Macintosh and 680X0 Macintosh CPUs, provides improved performance for workgroups of up to 100 simultaneous Macintosh and Windows users with up to 100 open files, is also immediately available from Claris Corporation (see separate news release).
Last month, Claris announced FileMaker Pro 3.0 Companion for Newton 2.0, currently scheduled to ship in 1996, offering FileMaker Pro 3.0 Macintosh users the ability to take their databases anywhere with the Apple MessagePad and later update or synchronize the data between the desktop and the Newton.

FileMaker Pro 3.0 for Macintosh requires any Macintosh, Power Macintosh or compatible computer running System 7.0 or later (System 7.1 or later recommended); CD ROM drive or 1.4 MB high density disk drive; hard disk drive and 4MB memory (8 MB recommended for 680X0 Macintosh; 8 MB required by Power Macintosh).

FileMaker Pro 3.0 for Windows 95 requires an Intel compatible PC running Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.51 or newer; 8 MB RAM (16 MB recommended for Windows NT 3.51); CD ROM drive or a 3 1/2 high density disk drive.
