Claris ships FileMaker Server 3.0

New Server Fully Supports FileMaker Pro 3.0 Users and Delivers Greater Administrative Capabilities

Santa Clara, Calif., Brussels - 21st of December 1995 - Claris Corporation announces the availability of FileMaker Pro Server 3.0 in Januari 1996, the next version of FileMaker Pro Server 2.1 that runs on Power Macintosh and 68030 Macintosh CPUs.

Built to fully support FileMaker Pro 3.0 for Macintosh and Windows network users within small-to-medium size businesses and corporate workgroups who need faster database access and performance, FileMaker Pro Server 3.0 can now host up to 100 database files (up from 16 files in Server 2.1), and 100 network users. Server 3.0 now empowers network administrators to accomplish a greater number of tasks, including the scheduling of automated backups and sending customized messages to connected users.

FileMaker Pro Server 3.0 can now share files simultaneously over AppleTalk, IPX/SPX and TCP/IP (via Open Transport 1.1), allowing FileMaker Pro network users to select the protocol of their choice.

Faster Data Access for Macintosh and Windows Users
Workgroups can experience dramatically faster performance compared to FileMaker Pro peer-to-peer networking when using FileMaker Pro Server 3.0 to host their FileMaker Pro 3.0 databases. Network intensive tasks, previously handled locally on a FileMaker Pro "peer-to-peer" network, such as indexing, are off-loaded to the FileMaker Pro Server 3.0, dramatically reducing the amount of data traffic that passes over the network.

FileMaker Pro Server 3.0 performance improvements fully leverage the AppleTalk, IPX/SPX and TCP/IP technologies, allowing for multiple database operations to take place simultaneously using asynchronous I/O and multi-threading.

A number of network administration tasks and capabilities have been greatly enhanced within Server 3.0. Using the new version, a network administrator can easily schedule automatic backups to a hard disk or external drive, launch customized AppleScripts, and create and send customized messages to any of the 100 users on the network. Further, administrators can close, disconnect and send messages to groups of files or guests that appear in the Administrative window, either from the Server machine or remotely. In addition, network administrators can monitor network statistics, such as current and peak usage, disk and network KB per second and more from within the administrative window.

FileMaker Pro Server Requirements and Availability
FileMaker Pro Server 3.0 British is available in Januari 1996 through authorized Claris resellers and dealers at a suggested retail price of 34.450 BEF or f1850 VAT excl.. Upgrades from a previous FileMaker Pro Server are available at a suggested retail price of 9.300 BEF or f500 VAT excl..

The new version includes the Server version disk, Server Administrator Guide and information on obtaining Open Transport 1.1. FileMaker Pro Server 3.0 requires a Power Macintosh, Macintosh with a 68030 processor (or higher) or compatible computer running Apple System 7.1 or later with at least 8 MB of RAM.
